Passion for Pipe Organs

Posted by schantzorganco on December 4, 2009

Many of us associated with the “King of Instruments” can recall – some vividly, others in less descriptive ways – the first time we encountered the pipe organ. Because of the instrument’s long association with organized religion, a typical initial encounter likely came in a house of worship. For some, perhaps it was in a concert hall or movie palace. Wherever that encounter first occurred, for most it was an emotional reaction.

What is it about this instrument which creates such a strong – and sometimes life-changing reaction? Is it the sonorities capable of being produced? Was it the association of where the instrument was located? Did the encounter spawn a life-long relationship – or simply a curiosity? Let us hear from you – tell us your story.

The Voicing Room…a place for discussion

Posted by schantzorganco on December 4, 2009

The voicing room is where the component elements of wood, lead, tin, brass, and wind are translated into musical ideas and identity. Our hope is, this “virtual” voicing room can offer the same fertile ground for a wide-ranging discussion about the pipe organ. As discussions ensue, we solicit and welcome a wide range of opinion and query. The only request is a plea for civil discourse and debate…opposing and challenging another’s opinion is fine – just remember the “golden rule.”

The Schantz Organ Company

Posted by schantzorganco on December 4, 2009

For nearly 137 years, the Schantz Organ Company has been part of the landscape of the American pipe organ. Since our inception, the craft-skills associated with the creation of the pipe organ have been honed in our workshop in Orrville, Ohio.

Now being lead by the fourth generation of the Schantz family, the committed artisans that form our firm are not only stewards of an impressive legacy, but also active partners as we continue to participate in multi-faceted projects - part of a vital and thriving American organbuilding culture.

As this space evolves, we hope to share information about our firm, the people who form it, the instruments we’ve been commissioned to build, and also to engender conversations about the pipe organ. We welcome you – and look forward your participation in the conversations to come.
