Passion for Pipe Organs

Many of us associated with the “King of Instruments” can recall – some vividly, others in less descriptive ways – the first time we encountered the pipe organ. Because of the instrument’s long association with organized religion, a typical initial encounter likely came in a house of worship. For some, perhaps it was in a concert hall or movie palace. Wherever that encounter first occurred, for most it was an emotional reaction.
What is it about this instrument which creates such a strong – and sometimes life-changing reaction? Is it the sonorities capable of being produced?
